He worked as an apprentice cabinet maker and in 1910 set up his own business producing bedroom furniture. The company became Stonehill Furniture after the Second World War and a public company in 1964. The main factory was in Angel Factory Colony, Edmonton, north London, with several other factories including a former Co-op factory in Pelaw, Co. Durham.
