MAKER:
G Plan is a British furniture brand. It began as a pioneering range of furniture in the United Kingdom produced by E Gomme Ltd of High Wycombe. The success of G Plan led to E Gomme becoming one of the UK's largest furniture manufacturers. From 1943, during World War II, furniture sales were controlled by rationing. The ending of this scheme in December 1952, combined with the 1951 Festival of Britain, led to a pent-up demand for more modern furniture. In 1953, Donald Gomme, the designer at E Gomme, decided to produce a range of modern furniture for the entire house which could be bought piece-by-piece according to budgets. Designs were available for several years so people could collect them slowly. All furniture was marked with a distinctive brand mark.

British furniture designer Victor Bramwell (V.B.) Wilkins is best known for his Fresco range for G-Plan. Although all of Wilkins known works were produced by G-Plan, there is little biographical information available on the designer. It can be assumed, however, that he worked as an in-house designer for the British manufacturer for many years.

In the early 1960s, British furniture manufacturer G-Plan set the standard for modernist, mass-market furniture in postwar Britain. In order to compete with imported Scandinavian furniture, G-Plan hired Danish designer Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921-2003) - who created a number of designs for the company. It can be assumed that Wilkins was highly influenced by Kofod-Larsen’s designs as Wilkin’s pieces are often wrongly attributed to Kofod-Larsen.

The company favoured the use of teak as a staple design material but also on occasion embraced luxurious timbers such as rosewood for its high end aesthetic. White and Newton furniture was a hit with trendsetters of the day and today the timeless designs remain cool and contemporary.
